Rain Event follows heat wave in south east Australia 24th November 2014

It seems to be a battle between heat and rain events with another rain event following the intense November heat wave Monday. Although the falls are going to be scattered and perhaps more concentrated in southern NSW, it will be welcome relief for farmers now desperate amid fears of another El Nino on the horizon!

Falls are expected to range up to 20mm in some areas and perhaps pockets of rainfall in the vicinity of 40mm or so in the high peaks of the southern alps. More rain may be expected in some areas during the week as a trough moves northwards and then stagnates.

Heavy Rain and an eventual east coast low is expected on the Illawarra to South Coast over the coming days. Some intense wind and rain conditions can be anticipated locally. Rain should develop from where it has already been raining over the northern inland areas of NSW and spread south during Saturday. Rain should increase during the day or perhaps afternoon. Most of the intense activity should be Sunday with thunderstorms possible and also an intensification in the low pressure system off the coast as the cold pool and associated upper trough destabilises the atmosphere along the coast.

Whatever happens, this is undoubtfully looking ideal for the best rainfall for NSW in months with mostly rainfall totals of about 20 to 40mm with some nearing 100mm possible in isolated pockets! Drought stricken areas of NSW will at least see some positive rains!

Canberra Bushfires Tornado 18th January 2003 2

Sydney Morning Herald Photographer Nick Moir sent me this Youtube link of the Canberra fire tornado from 18th January 2003. Nick Moir had suggested for years based on evidence and the final bushfire report that there was a very strong tornado in the fire! This Youtube video proves it! Incredible!
