Mutlicells and Supercells Wyoming 9th June 2018

Published by:

Low key day but fun to once again meet up with Anthony Cornelius and Michael Bath and friends arrived soon thereafter. Played around with a few multicells though left the south side cells and aimed for the northern one.

Then of course we went to Devil's Tower. Our aim was to get sunset here and perhaps mammatus. But we went a few more miles for a little lightning as we waited. I took interest in a developing base. We investigated this and found the base produced nice consolidation and organisation along strong convergence of sorts! The cell exploded literally above us. (Later on radar we found this to be a split). It showed impressive rotation which was filmed! It shrunk upwards soon after!

South Dakota Supercell 5th June 2018

We put all out effort to get to North Dakota and Bismark only to make the decision to head south in a last ditched effort.

We made it to Selby South Dakota in time for a spectacular lightning show. The wind was absolutely howling from the NE - dust was sandblasting us! The structure of the cell was amazing. More to come. Fredrick Muscat got an insane crawler with the storm structure. Thanks to Fredrick for his assistance in editing dirt in some of the pictures - the dirt marks on the sensor were from another day - I had not picked it up until tonight.

High base storms to supercell and base ball size hailstones! 30th May 2018

Just a few pics tonight - I made it ahead of the system all the way until the border with Oklahoma. Pretty intense for what we thought was boring early on! Let's just say I got ahead of the Perryton supercell only to find that the outflow pushed up some nasty storms near the border with Oklahoma! Yes Arnett with base balls clobbering my vehicle busting the windshield and damaging the body on one side!! That is - the side facing north, breaking a light and also almost losing a plastic cover near the mirror! All at night around 10-11pm!

Ahead of the storm in the Texas panhandle was this developing rapidly on outflow. It dropped several powerful bolts - I guess I got one of them - that means a developing powerful updraft I guess. Can you see the base surrounded by bolts! Yes that's the storm that would consume and batter my vehicle!
