Super Typhoon Vongfong has been designated as one of the most intense typhoons this season with a central pressure down to 900hPa and category 4 strength. It is expected to hit a Category 5 rating during Wednesday as it fuels warm moist air over the open ocean in the western Pacific.
The storm is following a similar path to Typhoon Phanfone, which hit central and eastern Japan with strong winds and heavy rainfall last week. One sign of a well developed typhoon is the compact eye seen in this image.
