Spectacular Shelf Cloud Sydney 30th November 2014

Began the day Sydney and headed south enroute to Braidwood but stopped short of there due to existing activity. A southerly outflow had created a boundary that fired activity north of Canberra and more around the Yass to Goulburn region. After heading towards Gunning from Lake George for the first cell of the day, we made our way to Marulan where a storm intensified. The storms remained either near the escarpment or other storms fired further west along the ranges. 1130jd093 1130jd009 1130jd042 1130jd049 1130jd053 1130jd056 1130jd057 1130jd072 1130jd087 1130jd089Finally, a cell was observed over the central Sydney region but as we approached it rapidly weakened undercut by the initial boundary that it developed upon. Our attention was diverted to an intensifying cell over Warragamba Dam region. This cell intensified rapidly and showed some impressive structure! And the contrast - sensational. Bolts descended from the base and pierced the mountain range several times. A consolidated and striated shelf cloud appeared and approached with possible localised rotation on the forward flank and within what appeared to be an inflow notch region. The storm then became quickly outflow dominant!

Violent Brisbane Storm 27th November 2014

Brisbane experienced a very violent supercell storm yesterday afternoon with extreme damaging winds, very heavy rainfall rates and giant hail to the size of grape fruit.

The storm developed as a southeast change moved through Gold Coast Hinterland and warm moist air and cooling air aloft overrode the this warm layer. A few thunderstorms developed but one in particular exploded with huge powerful updrafts and raced in a straight path to the city of Brisbane CBD. the first of the violent winds hit Archerfield with wind gusts to least 140km/h and then the well developed supercell powered on towards the city of Brisbane. Thousands of cars were damaged by large to giant hailstones and homes were unroofed and trees toppled onto them. The storm was described to be "the worst in a decade".

11245jd003 11245jd007 11245jd014 11245jd061 11245jd066With ample moisture and heating, storms developed over the mountains and rapidly moved towards the Sydney region by 3pm. Storms produced brief heavy rain and wind gusts although the shelf cloud structure once again was the main for these storms in Sydney with nice striations! There were also some pulsating lightning bolts! After taking pictures, I then headed north, and passed through a line near Lake Macquarie. Letting this go, I raced up the Hunter Expressway for another line that had developed. This produced a detached shelf cloud and some powerful lightning bolts - one in particular left me shaken given the instant nature of the bolt and cracking gun shot explosive thunder!
