Satellite Imagery monitoring extreme weather including Tornado Alley

Since the 1970′s, the launch of satellites have significantly enhanced metoeorology and forecasting around the globe. Satellites vary from geostationary satellites that remain fixed over a location above the earth to polar orbiting which circle abut the earth scanning as they traverse the globe. The types of images visible (picture of clouds from space) to infrared (thermal imagery based on temperature gradients) and water vapour imagery. A combination of all these images are used to monitor weather systems and significant events such as tropical cyclones and tornado outbreaks. Modern technology and the use of GPS standards enable satellite data to be overlayed with other data.

  1. “humid storm”

Not sure I have heard of such terminology myself but basically there is ample moisture progressing doing western Qld say tomorrow onwards towards the end of the week. That may initiate thunderstorms later on for northern Victoria and perhaps Melbourne.

    Hey guys.

Sorry I haven’t posted in a while, got back to work from X-mas and work got BUSY! Plus my wife and I have a baby on the way. Apologies for uploading a video of a very large wall cloud and thinking it had actually touched down. The person that filmed it still reckons there was a funnel on the ground and thats why they were calling emergency services during the footage. I am planning to start storm chasing as a hobby and I have read in BoM and my weather app on the phone that a large humid storm is expected around Melbourne. I tried looking at the satellite loops today and can’t see which weather front is going to bring this storm. It would probably be coming from Northern / Westerly regions? I have 2 mates lined up and we want to go chasing on Sunday so if any information could be provided to help our chase prep, that would be great! All the best and keep safe.
