Western Sydney downpour 31 March 2015

Rainfall

Late morning 31/3/2015, a rain cell developed just to the west of Sydney's CBD and tracked westwards first impacting Strathfield, then Sydney Olympic Park, Auburn, Merrylands and onto Prospect. The rain cell weakened as it tracked further further west.

This cell intensified around the Auburn region into a heavy thundery shower.

Looking at news reports, SES personnel were called out to numerous flooding jobs at Dulwich Hill, Strathfield and Concord West, many relating to flooding and leaking roofs. On that note, the roof of the Council building where I work also had leaking issues.

This rain cell dropped some serious rainfall totals as seen in the attached plot including:-

64 mm at Greystanes.
46 mm at Prospect Reservoir.
45 mm at Baulkham Hills.
43 mm at Homebush Bay West.

Much of the rain was localised but fell within the period 11 am to 12 noon. For example at Homebush Bay, the weather station recorded 4.8 mm at 11 am but by 12.30 pm, 42.2 mm had fallen.

Just before the event, a substantial but dark cloud base hung low over the region before unleashing the rainfall. At Homebush Bay weather station:-

The 11 am temperature reading was 19.9C but dew points were 19.4C.
The 12 noon reading was 18.3C but dew points were 18C.
At 12.30 pm the reading was 18.4C but dew points were 18.2C.

This is reflective of the very low dark cloud base observed prior to the event. The event was largely over by 12.30 pm.

Another article on this Major Supercell Outbreak North West Slopes and Plains 21st March 2015

One of the most incredible daytime lightning barrages of all my chasing, this ridiculous lightning display of the supercell outbreak in northern NSW just kept happening. We only got part of it and missed many bolts in getting time-lapse. The video is also extremely spectacular but the video stills below are only a the best of the best samples chosen!

0322jd065Another day's chasing before heading home was the plan on this day. But we were not prepared for the carnage of the tree leaf debris from the Narrabri event the previous day. I have not to this day seen so much shredding of leaves except perhaps the Sydney hailstorm. Although there were some significance of stripped leaves just to the north of the township, it was not until we headed 5 to 15 kilometres south of the town that a carpet of leaves lay on the side of the road. The fields were also littered with leaves. The stems were up to 30cm long simply stripped from gum trees and also smaller native pine trees.

This delayed our trip and also introduced an opportunity for storms to develop.0322jd092 0322jd073 0322jd0790322jd100
The storms then developed rapidly with anvil immediately overhead and a couple of close lightning bolts. A green tinge set the scene for the development of hail structures. Finally just north of Baan Baa, the hail began to fall perhaps pea sized to about 1 cm. Later though as we headed north a couple of larger stones )not measured) hit the vehicle. 0322jd101 0322jd106The structure to the west of the road was reasonably spectacular with rippled base and updraft vault. Strands of hail curtains to the south within the precipitation core. Later with the development of another storm to the east of Narrabri, a warning was issued for the region. The storms developed into a linear complex and eventually dissipated.0322jd115 0322jd117 0322jd119
